Awori on the verge of historyBy Oscar Obonyo, Nairobi, Nov 27 2007 In the event that he won and PNU formed the Government, it is not clear whether President Kibaki would re-appoint him VP. And if Awori fails in his bid, he would join former Sabatia MP and ODM running mate, Mr Musalia Mudavadi, as a sitting VP to have lost a parliamentary seat. Why a seasoned and respected politician who has risen to the second highest office in the land would want to risk his reputation in an exercise that could hand him defeat or confine him to the backbench is a venture that few, including the VP’s diehard supporters, comprehend. Mrs Ida Odinga addressing Kenyans in London on Saturday Nov 24 2007
|
Ida Odinga addresses Kenyans in UKBy Shad Bulimo, London, Nov 26 2007 Mrs Odinga said ODM is a home which accords equality and protection to everyone, young and old, victor and the vanquished. Hence the losers should never see themselves as losers in the first place – they participated in a process in which the outcome could go either way. Mrs Odinga likened political evolution to a small fish the Japanese keep as a pet called koy which is rather like omena. Most Japanese keep it a small bottle where it grows to a maximum size of one inch. But if you keep it a bigger bowl, it can grow to three inches. Still, if you keep it in a fish tank, it will grow to six inches and further still in a pond, it can grow to up to six feet. What does this mean? The size of the fish is in direct proportion to the space in which it operates. In relation to politics, Mrs Odinga said Kenyans had been bottled up like koy where their political aspirations were limited to the controlled mechanics of the small bottle. An ODM government will free koy to swim and prosper in a larger pond called Kenya where there is enough food for everyone to grow to a size that suits their circumstances.“Growth doesn’t always come from outside. Like koy, Kenyans can grow and prosper economically given the right spatial conditions,” she said.More>>> |

Kenya wins seat at IMO CouncilBy Shad Bulimo, London, Nov 26 2007 So what swung things for Kenya? In June 2007, for the time in its history, a major IMO conference was held in Nairobi to discuss an issue that had been on the agenda for the last 35 years. “The International Conference on Wreckage Removal which adopted the Nairobi International Wreck Removal Convention may have been the turning point for us,” said an ecstatic Mr Gerrishon Ikiara, the permanent secretary in the ministry of transport who was heading the Kenyan delegation. Besides sitting on the IMO Council where it has a chance to influence maritime decisions, the country also benefits directly from a technical cooperation fund. The Council has 40 members tiered in three categories – A, B and C on account of tonnage and shipping fleet. Among other things, Kenya has used its position on the Council to advocate successfully for changes in the configuration of the Council. For instance countries like Singapore were sitting in category C rather unfairly because they have one of the largest ports in the world. “ They were competing for resources with less endowed countries like Kenya but we have argued successfully and now Singapore is in category B,” said Mr Ikiara. She said the youth and particularly girls in Budalang'i face so many challenges not least early pregnancies which disrupt their education. She promised to put in place programmes that prevent early pregnancies but when they happen, the girls should be encouraged to return to education rather than condemned to a life of misery and hardship. "Pregnancy is a reality of life and young girls should go back to school and learn vocational skills," she told INGONEWS. Ms Were will face Raphael Wanjala and ODM's Ababu Namwamba in the finals. |

Trust me, am the bridge - RailaBy Alex Ndegwa and Ben Agina, Nairobi, Nov 15 2007 Turning biblical, Raila told his elated audience that two years ago, he had symbolically visited Mt Sinai and was now fired up to deliver Kenyans to the promised land. "Behold an orange future now awaits. We only have to negotiate the turbulent waters ahead. I am the bridge — the link between our historic past and bright future," he said. "Trust me, I will deliver." Raila spent exactly an hour to sketch out the party’s blueprint, witnessed by hundreds of supporters who intermittently interrupted his address with wild cheers. Twice through the riveting address, running mate Mr Musalia Mudavadi and ODM Pentagon member Mr William Ruto separately offered Raila a glass of water. More>>> |

VP facing the unthinkableBy Shad Bulimo, London, Nov 6 2007 The ghosts of the constitutional referendum that consigned him to eat raw rather than ripe bananas last November are lurking in his homestead ready to haunt him out of office come December 27 2007. He is pitted against the "iron lady", Prof Julia Ojiambo, ironically also a potential vice president in his Funyula constituency. The two of them are strong heads with a rich political and family history to boot. However, they both risk being swallowed by the ODM juggernaut that has camped root and branch in Funyula. The VP is by no means the only one having sleepness nights. The academic, Dr Mukhisa Kituyi is also 50-50 in Kimilili where he has had to change tunes to survive politically; in the process ditching Narc-K and toying with joining ODM. In Sabatia, the reverend, Moses Akaranga knows he is living on borrowed time. He's lucky to have had a chance to warm the seat for Musalia Mudavadi for the last five years. Otieno is still awaiting the Sh210, 000, which he was supposed to have earned after winning the fight but Livondo has insisted he was not going to pay him. Mr Livondo earned his "Mr Moneybags" fame when he literally showered money to the villagers of Ikolomani in Kakamega from a helicopter early this year.
