Death has occurred of Regina Edesa Munialo of Agricultural Research, Kakamega on May 31 2010 at Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu after a short illness. She was the wife of Justus Munialo Webala and daughter of the late Javan Adaka and Mama Respa Kenda Adaka. She was the mother of Carolyn Nasimiyu Lavatsa of Kanyangi & Co Advocates, Benson Webala Munialo of LEMA, Nairobi, Andrew Mukhwana, Stanley Nyongesa (LEMA), Philip Mulongo of Dial Up Associates Ltd and Paul Khisa of Oyatta & Co. Advocates. She was sister to Prof David Kikaya of United States International University (USIU), Harun Adaka, Francis Adaka (PKLC), George Azimale, Feda Alividza, Prisca Chembiru, Rebecca Usaji and the late Jacob Adaka. The body left Kakamega General Hospital Mortuary for a requiem mass at Anglican Church of Kenya yesterday. RIP: Dr Ezekiel Alembi: 1960-2010

The cruel hand of death has robbed Kenya in general and the people of Bunyore in particular, a shining star. Dr Ezekiel Alembi, the academic, poet, playwright and entrepreneur, died on Saturday at Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Nairobi aged just 49 of a heart attack.

An accomplished academic, Dr Alembi was also known for his entrepreneurial and creative abilities. As a director of Equity Bank, the late Alembi was in the vanguard of sensitising the youth of Bunyore to seek loans and start business enterprises. He was the chairman of the Literature Department at Kenyatta University and also a director of Kenyatta University Radio. Dr Alembi was the National Chairman of the Kenya Schools and Colleges Drama Festival, the African President of the International Festival of Young Playwrights and also Vice President for the International Society for Folk Narrative Research in charge of Africa.

He has authored numerous articles and children's books and won many awards including the Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature. Among his works include: James Mwangi: People’s Banker, Masinde Muliro: A Rebel With a Course; Jaramogi Oginga Odinga: People’s Revolutionary, Andisi and the Cat, Brave Girls, The Tortoise Song and Kwa Nini Ndovu Hali Nyama.

While Dr Alembi’s death at the prime of his life is a great loss to Kenya, for the people of Bunyore his passing is especially cruel. Not only was he a role model for Abanyole, his passion for putting Abanyole culture on the world map was particularly notable. He was the brains behind the revival of Bunyore Cultural Festival held each year in December at Ebusakami. His approach in delivering important messages of development through interactive people’s theatre resonated rather effectively with the youth of Bunyore.

Born at Ebwiranyi sub location in 1960, Dr Alembi started his educational journey at Ziwani Primary School in Taita Taveta where his parents worked before completing his primary education at Ebwiranyi Primary School. From here he joined Kakamega High School for his ‘O’ Levels and proceeded to Kangaru Boys High School in Eastern Province for his ‘A’ Levels. He then joined Kenyatta University graduating with a Bachelor of Education Degree in 1988. He enrolled for a Masters Degree in Literature at the same institution graduating in 1991. In 1997 he enrolled for a doctorate programme at the University of Helsinki in Finland where he graduated in 2002 with a PhD. His thesis was entitled: Construction of Abanyole Worldview through Okhukoma Poetry.

Dr Alembi who died after a short illness leaves behind a widow, Patricia and five children – two boys and three girls. Funeral arrangements are underway.

Mr George Ochokolo (left), the cultural leader of Kenya’s Iteso community, was buried on Sunday October 31 at his rural home in Amukura, Western Kenya. The paramount leader of the Iteso, His Highness Emorimor Augustine Osuban, led a delegation of prominent Iteso cultural and political leaders from both Uganda and Kenya to join Mr Ochokolo’s family in mourning their deceased patriarch, who was also the Deputy Prime Minister of the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU). The ICU is one of the community associations recognized by the Ugandan government alongside the traditional kingdoms of Buganda, Bunyoro, Toro and Busoga. Mr Ochokolo died of cancer on October 22. A prominent businessman in Busia, Kenya, Mr Ochokolo was born in 1936 and has been one of the two deputy leaders of the ICU since 2001. He is credited with working to renew cultural identity among Kenya’s estimated 300,000 Iteso.

The late Mama Nora Aliongo

Mama Nora Aliongo passed away on 25th July 2009 at Munyanza village (Khwisero) in Butere District of Western Province, Kenya. She was 95 years of age at the time of her death and would have been 96 next January. Mama Nora was the wife of the late Joash Aliongo and mother to the late Aywaya, Oyiera, Ondondo, and Malala. May the lord rest their souls in peace.  She was the mother to Mr. Okwomi Aliongo of Spring Texas USA (former student at Kenya Polytechnic and Lecturer at Railway Training School) and Mr. Arunga Aliongo of Munyanza village. She was mother in law to Violet Aliongo of Spring Texas USA (former Nurse at Coast General / Railway Institute Nairobi.

George Omoyi Lukoba was born in 1937 at Ebuloma Village Nasira sub location Bukhayo in Busia District. He was the first child of late Mzee Ibrahim Lukoba Odulwa and Mama Monica Christine Auma Lukoba (Namani). 'Omoyi' was so named a Teso name after a loyal herdsman who was very helpful while he was being born. He spent his early childhood with his beloved Grandmother Munyakho (Nakhabi) who was very fond of him and taught the skills of life including how to grind flour using traditional stones (olukina), fetch firewood and water from the river. This gave him a strong foundation for his future activities. He joined Nambale Primary School in 1946 for his common entrance exam in1952 and then proceeded to Nambale Intermediate School in1953 where he did his Kenya African Preliminary Examination (KAPE) in 1956 and passed.

Having come from a humble home he decided to forego further education and opted for employment to assist his parents and siblings. The first opportunity that came his way in terms of his profession was Medical Training School at Kisumu in early 1957 but he later abandoned this course for Railway Training School at Jinja where he trained as station clerk. After six months training he was posted to Tororo Railway Station in mid 1957 where he worked for a short time before he was posted to Kampala Railway Station. He worked at this location until early 1959 when he was sent to Railway Training School (RTS) Nairobi where he trained as an Assistant Station Master for six months after which he was posted to Kiu Railway Station.

He later worked at various stations including Fort Hall Murang'a, Simba, Lukenya, Sultan Hamud, Embakasi, and Dagorreti. He thereafter went back to RTS to train as a Station Master. He then proceeded to work at Eldoret Railway Station as Station Foreman in the late sixties until 1970 when he was transferred to Nairobi Railway Station as Yard Foreman before being promoted and posted to main station upper class booking office as in charge of reservations. He worked in this Office until he retired from Railways after 35 years of distinguished service in 1992.

George Omoyi met and married Faice Alice Mayabi (Namudu) who at present is a Lay Canon in church, on 9th March 1960 and later solemnized his marriage in the year 1979. He was blessed with five children, four sons and one daughter namely Geoffrey Omoyi, Vincent Omoyi both of New Jersey, Samuel Odhiambo, Samson Lukoba and Abigail Omoyi all based in Kenya. He is also survived by his grandchildren Ruth, Faith, John, Brigid, Elizabeth, Joy, Ashley, Imelda, Baby Joshua, Michelle and Aydan. Siblings Peter, Morris, Janet, Maximilla, Hannington, Naliaka, Adhiambo, Nabwire, Patrick, Wandera, Narotso, Nekesa, Khadudu, Thomas and Barasa and stepmother Nabwire. He was also brother to the late Maloba Lukoba and Henry Lukoba. He was also father in-law to Lydia Makhandia Omoyi and Alice Kariuki. Brother in-law to Lawrence Mugala Mugasiali and Florence Murema. Nephew to Lambert Barasa, Uncle to Kenneth Kaunda Odulwa, Julius Okuku, Arthur Lukoba and Charles Lukoba all of New Jersey And also he was a great uncle to Beatrice Maloba of New York. As well as cousin to Abigail Lunzalu and Olivia Kunguru of Texas

During his working life George invested his resources heavily in the welfare of his family including the education of his siblings and children, Land matters and subsequently income generating activities. After his retirement he concentrated on community development activities. He was the first Chairman of the Nambale Business Community, Member Board of Governors Kisoko Girls High School and Nambale Boys High School. He also served as Treasurer of Nambale Constituency Development Fund (CDF). He personally initiated the establishment of Nasira RC Secondary School and as the first Chairman of the BOG and subsequently served as a member. He spearheaded the construction of Nambale Bugeng'i road through Nasira Market and the electricity project from Tanga corner to Nasira. He was also on the forefront of requesting the creation of Busibwabo Location which was carved out of Suo Location. Until his death he was the first Chairman of Bukhayo Council of Elders Association. He initiated the creation of Busibwabo Dispensary. He was a respected senior mentor of his clan, the Bamenya of Bukhayo.

George Omoyi was devout Christian. He was a life member the Kenya Anglican Men's Association. (KAMA). He played a big role in the establishment and construction of St Johns Buloma Church and was Treasurer of this Church. He once served as a member of the Nambale Parish Council and until his untimely death served as Finance Chairman of the Parish. He always offered valuable ideas for the development of the church in general and contributed generously to its activities both in terms of resources and time.
God blessed George Omoyi with good health most of his life. In July 2007 he stated complaining of recurring headaches and treatment at Tanaka Nursing Home initially. He later traveled to for treatment at Nairobi where he was diagnosed with a brain tumour which necessitated urgent surgery. He underwent a successful operation on the 23rd August 2007 and the doctor advised for further treatment for radio and chemo therapy which was referred to Doctor Kannan of PJ Hinduja Hospital Mumbai in India between October and November 2007. He returned home to recuperate and continue with medication. Throughout his treatment the Doctors were helpful to the family and prepared us for any eventuality.

George fought hard and was committed to his treatment never missing any appointment or his medication. While at his ancestral home in Busia District, on Friday 2nd January 2009 he ate all his meals and went to bed and slept peacefully and woke up on Saturday morning to bid goodbye to his daughter and grandchildren who were leaving for Nairobi, however he was not able to eat anything the whole day. He was taken to Tanaka Nursing Home for medical assistance where the Doctor attended to him and returned home that evening. However his condition got worse in the evening and continued to deteriorate throughout the night. He finally succumbed peacefully on Sunday the 4th January 2009 at 7.15 a.m. in the presence of his wife, brother Peter, son Samson and attendant Nicholas.

It is with great shock, sorrow and sadness, we regretfully announce the sunset of Mr Naftal Onyiego Nyaribo, which occurred the morning of Saturday November 22nd, 2008, in Dallas Texas USA. He was a wonderful father to Esther K Ongori  and Jared Nyaribo of Houston Texas, Harrison Nyaribo and Drusilah Ratemo of Dallas Texas

He was Father in Law of Gilbert Ongori and Anna Kabese or Houston Texas,  and grandpa to Rehema Ongori and Faith Ongori.  Plans are underway to organize how the body of the late Mzee Onyiego will be transported back to Kenya  for burial.

Death has occurred of Mzee Joseph Makwaka Mwori on Friday, July 18th 2008 from Ileho, East Isukha Location. He was born in Shivakala Location, Imusali on 18.08.1937. He was a former chief accountant of East African Airways and HPG Gulf Engineers, the main contractors of Nyali Bridge, Mombasa. He is survived by his second wife, Elizabeth from Tiriki, ten children and 23 grand children. He was the father of Patrick Makwaka of London. He was the son of the late Mwori Shiveka and Cecilia Khamunga (they died nearly 20 years ago). His first wife, Teresa Akhwihonjekha passed on two years ago. She hailed from Iburimbuli, Khayega, Kakamega. He was uncle to Ernest Musalimwa, a former school inspector in Western Province and Wangula Khasiani of London.

Stella Lihavi Adebola and the family of the late Trufena Khasungu Mukasiali would like to register their appreciation for all the prayers and messages of condolences and financial and logistical support following the promotion to glory of her beloved mother on 27April 2008 at Ebutsunga village, Iranda sub location in Shinyalu Division, Kakamega District. The late Trufena was laid to rest on 7 May 2008.

Death has occurred of Doris Wefwafwa, a former Kenya Women Volleyball Team Captain. Doris, 34, died on Monday, December 10 2007 at Hardin County Memorial Hospital, in Campbellsville, Kentucky, USA.  At the time of her death, Doris was assistant team captain of the students volleyball team at Campbellsville University. She was due to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in social work this Friday, December 14, 2007.

She is survived by her children, Sammy Halai Wefwafwa, 18 and Rozzy Naomi Wefwafwa, 16. She was the daughter of the the Rev. Moses Wanyama Wefwafwa and the late Rev. Rose Wefwafwa. THE LATE MWALIMU MATAYO SHIUNDU MUKENYA: 1907 - 2007

Death has occurred of Mwalimu Matayo Shiundu Mukenya who at 100 years, was the oldest known Luhya man. Mwalimu Matayo was the father of Abeingo Community Chairman, Mr Juvenal Shiundu. He died early Wednesday, 31st October, 2007 at an Eldoret Hospital of cancer of the oesophagus.

He is survived by his second wife, Roselyne Muyaku Shiundu, 14 children from both Roselyne ( Ms Catherine Shiundu, Mr Peter Shiundu, Mr Dennis Shiundu, Mr Swart Shiundu, Mr Thomas Shiundu, Mr Edward Shiundu and Mr Samuel Shiundu) and his late first wife Arnolda Lutomia Shiundu ( Mr Francis Shiundu, Sister Teresa Joseph, Ms Teresa Shiundu, Mrs Jacinta Mondi, Ms Electina Shiundu, Mr Juvenal Muka Shiundu (JJ) and Mrs Margaret Mukhwana). He is also survived by  37 grandchildren and 28 great grand children.

SIBLINGS: The late Mwalimu Matayo Mukenya was brother to the late Nicolas Mukenya, Sorofina Namachanja, the late Michael Tyemeri and John Mukenya. STEPSON to the late Lucia Malala Mukenya and Elizabeth Atsieno Mukenya. FATHER IN LAW to: Mrs Mary Chirchir Tyemeri, Maliki Mondi, the late Harrison Munala, Rose Shiundu, Jacklyne Shiundu, Caleb Mukhwana, Margaret Tyemeri and Naomi Shiundu. SON IN LAW to the late Cifrosa Chebukwa of Shianda, the late Timona Kasuti and the late Prisca Kasuti of Webuye. Mwalimu Matayo is survived by 10 step brothers, 7 step sisters, 37 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

Mwalimu Matayo Shiundu Mukenya was born on 18 August 1907, the first born of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Mukenya, descendants of the Nabongo Dynasty. He attended Lugulu Friends African Mission School and  Butere AAC between 1922- 25. He was baptised as a Roman Catholic in 1926 before proceeding to St Peter’s Clavers Primary School in Nairobi.

Between 1928-34, Mwalimu Matayo was among the first students of Kabaa High School in Machakos where he volunteered to teach lower classes as he attended senior school. After Kabaa, Mwalimu Matayo was sent for training at the Government Veterinary Centre in Maseno. Between 1934-44, he taught at Sang’alo Veterinary Centre (now Sang’alo Institute) and  Baraton Veterinary Department. Between 1946-48, he had overall supervision of all primary schools in Mumias, Marama, Kisa, Butsotso and Bunyala. He was headmaster between 1949 until retirement in 1965 of the following primary schools: Bukaya, Matawa, Bumia and  Mwitoti. Mwalimu Matayo will be buried on Saturday, 10 November 2007 at his home in Lureko location, Nabongo sub location, Enyakwaka village on Mumias-Matawa Road.

On Thursday October 4, 2007 at (3:00 Am) Teresa Ajiambo Maloba went to be with the Lord. Teresa was born in 1939 in Busia District, Western Kenya. She is the wife of Josphat Maloba and the mother of Ben Maloba of DFI Church Gaithersburg Maryland. Teresa was diagnosed with Bone Marrow Cancer in June, 2007 at University of Maryland in Baltimore. She went back to Kenya in August 2007 to undergo treatment at Coptic Hospital in Nairobi where she passed away.
During her stay in U.S, Teresa extended her passion of Christ at the local Church in Washington DC Metropolitan area (Disciples International Fellowship church). We celebrate her life for she has been a mother, a friend to many, especially to her 3 year old grand Daughter “Nicole" who she spent most time with while she was in the U.S.
There will be prayers and fundraising on Saturday October 13th at Forest Oak Middle School in Gaithersburg starting at 4.30 pm to carter for the outstanding bill and funeral expenses. The address is 651 Saybrook Rd, Gaithersburg MD 20877.

Death has occurred of Mrs Salome Anyango Okello in the Busia Bus accident on 9 October 2007. She was the beloved daughter of Gabriel Ondega and Cicilia Angengo Of Butula Village, Busia District. She was sister to Ann Melonia and Eliandro Okello of Harambee House, Nairobi and auntie to George Wajackoyah of California, USA and Jane Chitayi. She leaves behind a widower, Mr Justus Onyango and six children - two sons and four daughters. She was born on  25/12/1942 at Bulwani Village, Marachi, Busia District and laid to rest on Saturday, 20 October 2007.

21/06/07: Wilson (Willy) Marende, ex airforce major who flew coup leader Hezekiah Ochuka to Tanzania in 1982 has died. Marende (no relation to current Emuhaya MP, Kenneth Marende) died after a long illness. He hails from Mumboha village, Ebusikhale sub location, Bunyore, Emuhaya District. He is survived by a son and a daughter. His wife passed on a few years ago. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated in Nairobi and Luanda.
