Livingstone Ombete speaking to Abeingo committee members in London yesterday. He says Luhya need to embrace business culture. |
Luhya's most dependent communityBy Shad Bulimo, April 19 2008 Ombete who is transiting London on his way to the US said that virtually all means of economic livelihood in Kakamega are controlled by what he referred as “foreigners”. Luhya depend on these “foreigners” for basic supplies such as maize ferried from farms in Trans Nzoia. Within days of the violence, Kakamega quickly ran out of fuel, maize and vegetables and people began to realise just how economically dependent they are on “foreigners” even in their own backyard. However the post election violence has produced one positive outcome as Luhya are now beginning to think business. Ombete said the Luhya need to borrow a leaf from other communities such as the Kikuyu and Kisii who have an entrepreneurial disposition that gives them an economic advantage. Ombete paid tribute to Abeingo Community Network and Halala USA for preaching economic empowerment of the Luhya as a means to attain respect and independence. He decried lack of leadership especially among politicians who appear only interested in personal rather than community development. Abeingo Community Chairman, Juvenal Shiundu briefed the lawyer about Abeingo’s objectives and its plans for the next few years and invited him to enrol as a member which he accepted. Western democracy unsuitable for AfricaBy Shad Bulimo, April 9 2008 He said the bottom line is oil. If a country is rich in oil, the West turns a blind eye to political and undemocratic practices. He gave examples of Angola, Gabon or even Nigeria where shambolic elections are held but not as much pressure is brought to bear as in the case of Kenya and Zimbabwe. Mr Dowden, who spent 20 years working as a journalist in Africa said that politics in Africa is not ideological but often personal. He said scandals like Goldenberg and Anglo-leasing are hatched to fund political campaigns. Mr Dowden said an opinion poll conducted last year revealed that topmost issue for Kenyans was inequality. “Most Kenyans felt that they were living in an unequal society where they couldn’t develop their potential, “he said.
