Miss Gilbraltar wins Miss World '09

Miss Gibraltar, Kaiane Aldorino, has won the coveted crown as Miss World 2009, triumphing out of 112 beautiful and talented young women in the 59th Miss World Final from Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, City of Gold. Ksenia Sukhinova crowned her successor.

Miss Uganda 2009, Maria Namiiro was the best performing East African entrant in the Miss World 2009 Beauty Pageant coming 44th overall in the swimsuit category. She is seen here posing by the poolside in a Johannesberg hotel. Miss Namiiro also made headlines in South African press as the only contestant to kneel before South African president, Jacob Zuma in a traditional Ugandan female salute.

Leso's the fashion item in EA Africa

Is the Leso or kanga the runaway favourite fashion item for East African women? These beauties on the left certainly think so or look it. The Tanzanian duo were modelling during the Swahili Fashion Week in Dar es Salaam on November 5, 2009.

Miss Venezuela wins Miss Universe 2009

In Venezuela, beauty pageants are big business. In the country's many beauty schools, vast sums of money are spent on training and transforming hopefuls with an almost military dedication. On Sunday night, that effort paid off once again as Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe, assuming the title from her compatriot Dayana Mendoza to add to the country's record of the most international pageant wins in history. The triumph of Ms Fernandez, who is 5ft 10in and aged 18, makes Venezuela the first country to win the title two years running and takes the beauty-obsessed Latin American nation to within touching distance of its next pageant goal - to take the record for the most Miss Universe victories from the US, which is one title ahead. Miss Tanzania 2009 is 21 year old Illuminata Wize of the Sukuma tribe, the only representative from East Africa at the Miss World Beauty Pageant held in Bahamas. Kenya was listed as a participant but Miss Kenya was missing.

Bunyore beauty conquers the earth

Winfred Adah Omwakwe from Bunyore is the only Kenyan woman to have won a major world beauty pageant. She was crowned Miss Earth 2002 dislodging the reigning queen, Dzejla Glavovic of Bosnia & Herzegovina. Miss Winnie as she is popularly known, is the first black representative and first from the African region to hold the Miss Earth title. She is also the first woman from Kenya to hold a major international beauty pageant title when she formally succeeded Džejla Glavović of Bosnia & Herzegovina as Miss Earth 2002. Glavović was stripped of her title for failing to fulfill her duties. She has previously been crown Miss Toursim Kenya and was runner-up in Miss Universe Kenya representative in 2002. Loice Shinaka from Kakamega burst into the beauty scene with this magnificent display of Luhya beauty during the second Miss Kenya UK 2005 Beauty Pageant held in London. The event which was organised by Sacoma attracted Kenyan beauties from Kikuyu, Luo, Taita and Coast. Sacoma has since teamed up with Pauline Long to launch Miss East Africa. ANDENYI STRIDES INTO CATWALK HISTORY - IS SHE LUHYA'S BEST?

Twenty-two year-old Dorisilla Andenyi Anjalo was born on May 3, 1985 in Nairobi. She comes from a family of six girls and one boy. Her parents are the late Pastor Abednego Anjalo and Kusa Anjalo. She hails from Ebukanga in Bunyore. Andenyi beat 6000 African girls to earn a coveted place in the finals of M-Net Nokia Face of Africa Beauty Pageant held in Sun City, South Africa in August, 2006, first Kenyan to do so. The only other Kenyan contestant was Gertrude Ogada who was eliminated in the primary rounds. Although Andenyi did not win, she was among the top ten finalists who survived the grueling elimination shows spanning several months to reach the top. Ms Venatia Otto of Namibia was took the crown of Nokia Face of Africa 2006.

Others in the top ten were Kea Basima (Botswana), Sandra Bigirimana (Burundi), Mirash Davis (Ghana), Catherine Hemans Yankey (Ghana), Ishioma Onyebo (Nigeria), Melody Zulu (SA), Mulenga Mubanga (Zambia) and Munira Namakula (Uganda). Although disappointed, Andenyi says she has learnt a lot from the experience and is determined as ever to become Africa’s next top model ready to grace the catwalks of London, Paris, Milan and New York. But first, she has a university degree to complete.
“I know I want to become an international model, but my education comes first,” she says. The search for Africa’s next Supermodel started in February 2006, as the Nokia Face of Africa scouting team traveled the continent, visiting 12 countries and seeing over 6 000 contestants.
