Ababukusu are perhaps the most cuturally active of all the Luhya subtribes. They are closely related to the Abamasaaba and the Abagisu of eastern Uganda. They take their traditions very seriously. Perhaps the best known cultural practice is the circumcision ceremony; an elaborate affair that is marked with fanfare, songs and other oral traditions. The fervour with which Ababukusu organise the circumcision jamboree can only rival the annual Rio de Janeiro Carnvirore. Its main aim is to bestow the right of passage of boys into manhood. You need to see it to believe it.
