BUKHAYO ECONOMY

Backwater of economic inactivity:

The mainstay of economic activities in Bukhayo is subsistence agriculture and petty trade. Among the crops grown include maize, beans, millet, sorghum and cassava. Grand plans to build a sugar factory and transform the economic circumstances of Busia District through commercial sugarcane farming and production, have come a cropper more than 15 years since the idea was mooted by the Kenya government; a victim of political bickering and senseless economic prioritisation. Like most of Western Province, Busia District remains a backwater of economic inactivity, neglected and forgotten since colonial times.
