Ancestral cousins of the Babukusu of Kenya: The Bagisu, alternately referred to as Abagisu, Gisu, Gishu, Masaba, or Sokwia (people of Bugisu) are an umbrella group consisting of BaMasaaba, BaDadiri, Babuuya, BaKhiende. They are closely related to the Babukusu of Kenya. Bagisu live in the mainly in Mbale District of Uganda on the slopes of Mount Elgon. They speak Lugisu. which Ethnologue classifies as a bantu language belonging to the Luhya group. In fact folklore has it that their ancestor Mukisu was a blood brother of Mubukusu the stated fore-father of the Babukusu. The Bagisu have many similarities with the Babukusu of Western Kenya a region they moved to after a rift in the family that meant they left their ancestral land in the region currently occupied by their cousins the Bagisu. |
